The Buzz: Gracie Hart fans,
listen up: Right before Sandra Bullock unveils her wildly anticipated
science-fiction turn in Gravity,
she teams up with Melissa McCarthy to keep the female-powered
comedy renaissance going. The movies also serves as Paul Feig's follow-up to Bridesmaids, as the director/producer/occasional writer is making industry strides on a Judd Apatow level.

The Buzz: This project came
together quickly. It's as if Gerard Butler suddenly remembered that
audiences like him most in action mode and Antoine Fuqua gave up yet
again on that Pablo Escobar project and another script, Prisoners (which will
now serve as director Denis Villeneuve's follow-up to the pretty
brilliant Incendies).
In a year where we will be treated to at least two projects with a
similar theme, Olympus is no exception; months from now we can
compare it to White House
Down.

The Buzz: Even if the
long-planned fourth installment doesn't arrive for Summer 2014 (though Rise of the Planet of the
Apes' writers are currently working on the project), Dr. Alan Grant,
his crew, and those dinosaurs who now look so dated will get the 3D
overhaul/cash-grab. It would be cool to take kids to see this for their
first time.

The Buzz: Brian Helgeland
excels with serious drama, especially as a screenwriter (L.A. Confidential and Mystic River come to
mind), so I am looking forward to what he does with this landmark sports
story as its writer/director. Of course it's a huge undertaking for the
relatively unknown Chadwick Boseman, and a major casting risk on the
studio's part, but that makes us want to root even harder for everyone
involved.
Evil Dead (2013)

Horror
Mia, a young woman struggling with sobriety, heads to a remote cabin
with her brother and three friends, where the discovery of a Book of the
Dead leads them to unwittingly summon up demons living in the nearby
woods.
Director:Fede Alvarez |

The Buzz: Yes, it's a touchy
situation, to discuss this particular remake, which was being developed
as Sam Raimi's Spider-Man legacy was rebooted. The announcement
that Diablo Cody would co-author the screenplay yielded divided fans
even further, even though Jennifer's
Body will one day earn its due status as a cult classic. Loving the
notion of an addled female protagonist, by the way, and star Jane Levy
is great on "Suburgatory". Fede Alvarez earned the director's chair
after his short Panic
Attack! became a viral sensation.
Scary Movie 5 (2013)

A couple begin to experience some unusual activity after bringing their

nefarious demon.

The Buzz: Development on this
project dates back to 2007, a year after Scary Movie 4's
worldwide success and the early days of the The Weinstein Company.
(Harvey Weinstein and his brother Bob left the Miramax offices on the
Disney lot 2005.) Six years is a long time between sequels, and the Black
Swan satire feels so aged already, it's no wonder that Anna Faris
isn't returning.

After visiting Mont Saint-Michel, Marina and Neil come to Oklahoma,

struggling with his vocation, while Neil renews his ties with a
childhood friend, Jane.
Director:Terrence Malick |
|
Watch Trailer Add to Watchlist |
The Buzz: Terrence Malick is
one of the least time-bound directors in history, so the short wait for
his follow-up to The Tree
of Life is worth noting, as is the divisive reception the film
received at its Venice premiere last year. But this should come as no
surprise given Malick's unconventional approach to, well, everything.
The cattiest thing we've ever heard Ben Affleck 2.0 say came at the
expense of Malick's on-set direction, which seemed more focused on
capturing natural elements than human interactions. The subject matter
definitely seems skewed for older audiences only - the same people who
now flock to Affleck-as-filmmaker's work.

The Buzz: TRON: Legacy director
Joseph Kosinski's newest science-fiction undertaking has been in
development for 5+ years, and the graphic-novel version should be
released in conjunction with the film that will serve as Tom Cruise's
main 2013 release, though it looks like All You Need Is Kill
could be released later in the year. Looking forward to how Kosinski has
visualized a universe separate from the Kevin Flynn aesthetic. Adding
layers to the welcome intrigue is screenwriter William Monahan, best
known for turning the very Eastern Infernal Affairs into
the Western hit The
Departed, and a support cast featuring two Oscar winners, the
universally hottest guy from "Game of Thrones," a former Bond Girl, and W.E. survivor Andrea
Riseborough (who is excellent in Shadow Dancer).

The Buzz: The Bucket List put
writer Justin Zackham on the Hollywood map, and his next to-do is also
centered on older adults; this time, Diane Keaton and Robert De Niro,
last seen together in Marvin's
Room, play the divorced parents who fake a certain level of
happiness as their adopted son's wedding approaches. At first
consideration, I thought this was some sort of romantic comedy starring
Katherine Heigl - a harder sell.
